At Holy Cross, the English curriculum aims to ensure all students learn to read, write, listen to, speak, create and reflect on the spoken, written and multimodal text.

We aim for the students to appreciate, enjoy and use the English language to convey information, form ideas, facilitate interaction with others, entertain, persuade and argue.

Teaching is focused on all aspects as outlined by the Victorian Curriculum and encourages our students to use strategic actions within, beyond and about texts when reading and writing.

Our reading approach is based on unpacking the “Science of Reading”with learners.  It is focussed on developing the oral language, vocabulary and phonological development of early readers, before extending to developing comprehension strategies.
